Tree Care Services
Tree Removal
TREE REMOVAL
Arguably our bread and butter, tree removal is our most requested service here in Western Washington. As the land around Puget Sound is continually developed and modified, the need to move, retain, and replant trees is always increasing. Fortunately, we're here to help. Tree removal is a pretty straightforward process. When it comes to small trees or shrubs, home or property owners can usually take care of this task on their own. However when we talk about medium to tall trees, anyone wanting to remove a tree should seriously consider having our team come out. Tree removal can be challenging, and requires the right tools, know-how, team, and contingencies. We all know the right tools make the job easier. We come equipped with everything required, so you're not having to sort through your garage in the middle of a project. We also know how to bring down a tree safely and efficiently. While felling isn't overly complicated, the wrong move can result in property damage and injury. Don't risk it. Call us instead. We're also positioned to act quickly if something should go wrong. Tree isn't felling the way we intended it to? We can handle that with cables and additional tools and techniques. Do you have a wood chipper or saws to dispose of debris? We do. We've got everything taken care of, and can probably save you money over a DIY project. Plus, why give up your weekend? Give us a call or submit an inquiry, and we'll have a team out to quickly and efficiently remove trees or shrubs and make your yard everything you want it to be. |
Stump Removal and Grinding
STUMP REMOVAL AND GRINDING
Contact us for tree stump removal and grinding – and save yourself time, money, and headaches. While the removal or felling of small trees may be a manageable weekend project, stump removal can be a pain. Our team has seen even small, well-embedded tree stumps stump even the most capable green-thumbs (Pun intended). Give us a call, and let us know you’re looking to remove an unsightly stump, or entire tree. We’ve got you covered. Why remove stumps? They decrease your property value and curb appeal, make your yard harder to mow and garden, can take up space for other yard improvements, and attract weeds and pests. Did we mention that they’re unsightly, and scream “we couldn’t quiet finish this project!”? Give us a call, and we’ll be happy to provide a quote and take your stump away. In the process, we’ll also protect your yard or lawn from damage, and even leave the wood chips or stump fragments if you’d like. Given time, expertise and tools, you could remove any stump yourself. Generally we’re talking about shovels, picks, perhaps an axe and/or saw, cables, maybe a winch, and (if it’s a big project) a tractor or truck. Regardless of your approach, these projects can become increasingly frustrating. Tree stumps are challenging due to their root structures. Generally, the older the tree, the more established the roots – meaning a series of natural anchors that extends throughout a yard or lawn. Most stumps are impossible to move by hand, or require tools we don’t usually keep in the garage. More often than not, we see people attach a cable to a vehicle, and pull the stump out with brute force. But this can be dangerous, and can destroy your lawn. Save the time and headaches, and let us remove that stump for you. |
Tree Pruning
PRUNING
Pruning involves the deliberate removal of smaller twigs, brush, and dense material and does a few things for trees: it reduces competition for light and water, helps the tree remain healthy, and reduces the extent to which trees catch wind and accumulate ice. Regular pruning is a critical aspect of tree maintenance, and can vastly increase the life of your trees. There are several different types of pruning. Your needs will vary, and our team will work with you to determine exactly what you need. Young Tree Pruning: Young trees can develop multiple leaders (think of these as miniature trunks protruding from the top of the tree) and multiple branches throughout the height of the tree. While this may sound natural, multiple leaders can rob the tree of nutrients, and result in wasted growth. Voluminous branches also cause issues, as these tend to weigh young trees down in a negative manner. The pruning of young trees is critical to proper growth, in that it sets the foundation and "skeleton" for a healthy tree later in life. Don't neglect this step (especially if you're planting yourself) otherwise your efforts and attentiveness could go to waste. Mature Tree Pruning: Trees at all stages of life require pruning - and mature trees are not an exception. A tree benefits from pruning in all the same ways as younger trees: pruning redirects energy toward healthy growth, reduces the weight load of the tree, and encourages new growth. Arborists often refer to this as "cleaning." Any dead or dying material should be removed in this step. Additionally, pruning around the bottom of the tree can help increase light, and ensure a tree's branches aren't resting on the ground. This practice, known as "raising" has aesthetic benefit as well. In some cases, pruning can be combined with trimming, where much larger segments of a tree are removed. Fruit Tree Pruning: Fruit trees require specific care to continue producing fruit. While this isn't challenging work, timeliness is important - as is making the right cuts. Let our team help you reset your fruit trees each year so they continue to produce in the coming season. Vista Pruning: Do you have a great view from your deck or patio? Is it obstructed or partially blocked by large trees or branches? "Vista Pruning" is the practice of trimming and pruning branches back to restore a view. Let our team know this is what you're looking for, and we'll ensure you get your view back! |
Tree Trimming
TREE TRIMMING
Think of trimming as the "big brother" to pruning. Trimming is the select and deliberate removal of large, damaged, or overgrown branches from trees. Trimming has a few benefits. One, it increases the beauty of your yard, increases views from windows and porches, and enhances the space you live and work in. But it’s also generally good for the trees. Many trees become increasingly overgrown. Some larger trees will develop overgrown branches, which can ultimately sag and cause cracking along the tree trunk. In some cases, if untreated, this can destroy your tree. This in turn creates both safety risks, and may result in the need for an entire tree removal. Don’t let your trees get to this point, and instead call us to professionally trim your trees. Best of all, we’re trained to trim in a manner which prolongs tree life – and we’ll haul all the refuse away for responsible disposal. Schedule today. |
Soil Services
SOIL SERVICES
Unless we're planting a garden, most of us don't think too much about what's in our dirt, or whether or not it's optimal for tree growth. Some hearty trees aren't picky, but many are. So it pays to have ideal soil. From soil compaction to PH levels to the degree of moisture your soil absorbs, holds, and retains, ideal soil is an important element of tree growth. The wrong soil can compact, which limits water and root freedom - thereby stunting the growth of even the healthiest young saplings. Soil also develops several layers which impact trees in different ways - the wrong conditions can lead to heat stress or draught, and can negatively impact your trees. Our team can help in a few ways. If you're planting new trees, we can help recommend (or procure) the best mix of soil for your project. We can also provide soil testing, and provide recommendations on how to make your soil (and your trees) healthier. Finally, we can work to remedy or fix soil conditions as part of a larger plan to maintain the health of your trees. Give us a call today, and ask about what we can do for you. |
Storm Cleanup
STORM CLEANUP
Storms are prevalent in the Pacific Northwest; and Mill Creek is no different. Every year, storms damage or destroy hundreds of trees, and threaten homes, businesses, and property. They also obstruct traffic, slow commerce, and prove a major inconvenience. Fortunately, we're here to help. Our team is ready to assist with 24/7 storm cleanup. Not only are we standing by with equipment and personnel - we actually track storms in advance of their landfall or impact, and ensure we're postured to respond when the time comes. This level of preparedness means we're able to serve more people quickly, and get Mill Creek back into business after a major weather event. Storm cleanup includes whatever services are required. Typically, our team clears fallen trees and debris, removes trees that have fallen or are about to fall on houses and structures, removes limbs that may have broken during a storm, works with utilities crews to remove trees threatening power lines or public infrastructure, and a whole lot more. We're even able to work on small plants and shrubs in your yard - whether to clean up, or ensure plants are healthy after a traumatic natural event. Give us a call, let us know how we can help. Note that in emergency circumstances, our crew will get to everyone who needs help. However, we may prioritize cases where imminent damage to life or property may occur, then move on to cases of downed trees on roads and sidewalks. Thank you in advance for your flexibility during uncertain times like these! |
Bracing and Cabling
BRACING AND CABLING
Bracing and cabling is a practice undertaken to stabilize branches, or the entirety of older, damaged, sick, or unstable trees that pose a danger to homes, property, or life. The practice is undertaken when a tree becomes damaged, or too heavy, and poses a potential threat. Bracing and cabling are also used to minimize a trees' chances of falling over in the wind or a storm, and can save customers thousands of dollars. Bracing is the practice of non-permanently attaching a rod or similar fixture to a tree which then connects to the ground or another solid surface. This rod adds additional support, and keep the tree from falling in weather, snow, or with added age. The rods can eventually be removed, pending a thorough inspection. In some cases, the rods remain for the remainder of tree's life. Cabling is a similar practice, but instead of rods or solid materials, relies on high-strength steel or metal cables. The cables are attached to the tree or its strongest limbs, and safely anchored. This technique is useful for trees that are leaning, have shallow root structures and are susceptible to wind, or are damaged. This work is best completed after our team conducts a thorough inspection of your needs, and your trees. Give us a call today to schedule a consultation, and we'll find you the solution you need. |
Tree Disease and Insects
PLANT DISEASE AND INSECTS
Though we often don't pay them much attention, plants (and trees) can suffer from both insects and diseases. And once an infestation or disease begins to spread, sometimes it's impossible to stop, and can kill an entire tree, or damage it beyond repair. The Pacific Northwest sees a number of plant diseases and insect-related challenges - but our team is here to stop either of those things from damaging your trees. You may have heard of a few of the diseases and infestations our trees can suffer from: Powdery Mildew: powdery mildew impacts shrubs more than trees, but we still see it here in Washington - especially given our moisture. It's not hard to miss. Powdery Mildew leaves a whitish, mold-looking substance on afflicted plants. The good news is that this fungus can be stopped if caught in time. Scale Insects: these tiny insects look like scales, and attach themselves to small trees and shrubs. They deplete tree nutrients, cause twigs and leaves to die, and may stunt growth. They're also extremely difficult to identify until an infestation is underway. Apple Scab: do you have wild apple or crabapple trees? Have you seen your fruit develop brown, unsightly scabs? You're probably dealing with Apple Scab - caused by a tree fungus. Don't let Apple Scab, or similar fungi ruin your fruit bearing trees. Boring Insects: boring insects bore (dig) into a tree's bark, slowly killing the tree and leaving rut or trench like formations in its wake. Mites: tiny insects that feed on the chlorophyll in plants. How can you tell if you have them? Mites leave tiny white holes in leaves in their path. If the mites are Spider Mites, they'll also leave webbing. Mites can be very destructive, so identifying this problem early is critical. Bagworms: bagworms are a small type of caterpillar. They feed on plants and trees, can be difficult to spot given their twig-like appearance, and do a lot of damage quickly. Notice that your tree bark isn't looking healthy? Do you see odd growth on your plants and shrubs? Call us today and we'll have someone out to diagnose, and strategize with you to bring your yard and trees back up to the best they can be. |
Commercial Tree Care
COMMERCIAL AND PUBLIC SERVICES
Looking for commercial-scale tree services? We can probably help! We're well-suited to tackle large scale jobs for commercial and municipal partners. As we like to say, a tree is a tree - and our techniques for safe tree removal, maintenance, and care don't change. Give us a call today or submit a request for a quote to discuss your options, and your needs. While we don't handle large scale commercial logging operations, or large-scale forestry projects, we can manage large parks or green spaces, and assist businesses and municipalities alike in all of their tree care needs. Just suffered through a storm? Have us out for an assessment, and to clear debris. Looking to fire-proof your property? We can do that too. |
Why Hire a Tree Care Service?
We get it. Tree care costs money. But the costs of avoiding it - or trying to do it on your own could be even higher...
Why hire a tree care service? Aren’t you performing tree care and maintenance tasks I could do on my own? Also, isn’t tree care expensive? There are a few answers to these questions – and we believe they unequivocally point towards hiring a professional tree care service like Mill Creek Tree Care.
Trees are robust – but to give them the best chance at a long life, they require care. Just like a lawn, or flowers, they’ll be fine on their own, but we can derive a lot more pleasure from them if we invest some tree care love just a couple days a year. Trees, unlike your lawn or a flower – can also be dangerous if we don’t properly take care of them. Tree trimming and removal can save you thousands of dollars. Even stump removal can avoid damage to equipment, lawn mowers, and vehicles.
Tree care isn’t just about cutting a few branches off your tree. It’s not just about pruning once a year and calling it good. Good tree care is about maintaining your trees, shaping and caring for them so that they enhance your home and property, and last for years to come. There’s also the tree safety thing we mentioned. Tree pruning and tree trimming – every year or two by trained arborists can enhance your trees in this manner. Tree removal services are critical before and after storms. Vista pruning will open up expansive views if you’re lucky – and will make your home that much more enjoyable. Selling a home? We’re all familiar with the importance of perception and aesthetics when it comes to raising your home’s selling price, and curb appeal. You’ve heard about the importance of mowing the lawn, applying fresh paint, and planting some nice flowers. But what about your trees? It’s a safe bet that overgrown, ratty-looking trees are going to reduce the curb appeal of your home. In fact our friends in the real estate business confirm that this is the case. A tree removal company can quickly conduct some tree trimming and tree pruning, clear land around your trees and home, and can dramatically increase the beauty of your home. We recommend these types of services yearly.
We also recommend spending the money and hiring a tree care company to provide tree care services, versus trying to do this on your own. Here’s why. Sure, you can grab your gardening shears and lop a few twigs and branches off of your pine or evergreen tree to help keep its clean shape. It doesn’t take that long to cut a couple branches off of a tree that’s intruding over your deck out back. And yes, you can rake up all the pine needles, bag them for the trash, and cut up the branches for the yard waste bin. But how much more are you going to do? And how familiar are you with your trees? Further, what else needs to be done that you’re going to ignore (or not notice) because you’ve contentedly finished the project on your own….or so you thought. If you’re like us, you have dozens of trees on or around your property. How many need tree trimming? How many have overly large, unsafe branches and limbs because previous homeowners and neighbors never took the time to conduct proper tree care? How many people think the cost of tree removal is too high, or that tree pruning and trimming are just for aesthetics? We get it, no one wants to spend the money, but tree care is also preventative. And one of the problems with doing work on your own is that you may miss many of the preventative opportunities that our team will help point out. Our trained arborists have worked with thousands of trees, and have conducted countless tree removal, tree felling, tree pruning and branch cutting jobs. We’re an experienced tree cutting service, and tree felling company, and will get the job done right. This experience is also critically important. We’ve met many clients who have set a few hours aside on a Saturday, in an attempt to pull a stump out of the ground from their property. 99% of them have admitted that it was way harder than they thought it would be. And it is! Most people lack the understanding of how a stump, root system, and root ball dominate your yard underground. Most people also lack the tools to remove stumps. It takes people far longer to complete these tasks than you would think. Then you get to figure out what to do with a giant, leftover stump. Good luck with that.
Worse, we’ve seen people who have identified dangerous trees that require tree removal, but refuse to work with a tree removal or cutting service because the tree removal costs are too high. Again, we get it, but have you ever felled a 3,000 pound tree? You have? How did it go? Are you confident you can do so without the tree hitting your home, shed, fence, car, or property – or that of your neighbors? Mill Creek, Everett, Bothell and the surrounding areas are exploding with growth. Homes are packed tighter and tighter together, separated by fences and sheds with cars wedged in between. Felling a tree, or trimming major branches can be risky to property – let alone life. Don’t go about it on your own – because the costs (if it goes wrong) will likely be greater than the tree removal costs had you just contracted with a licensed tree removal or tree trimming company. Seriously. Call Us. Let us give you a quote and at least consider working with professionals who will analyze, remove your tree, clear the debris, grind your stump, and leave your yard better than before we arrived. If you do attempt to undertake these projects on your own (even little ones) please be safe – and if you find yourself on a ladder with a chain saw and suddenly don’t feel comfortable – please give us a call. We’ll be happy to assist you.
Tree care is an investment. Working with arborists is an investment. But it’s an investment in the beauty of your home and property, and in the safety of your home and those who live in it. For most of us, we spend the most time at work, and the second biggest chunk of our time at home. And most of us have trees. So we think spending the money once a year on tree care to beautify the outside of a place you spend considerable time is a great deal – and we look forward to helping you achieve those great results! Call today, and thanks for checking us out!
Mill Creek is a part of the vibrant Pacific Northwest - and our trees are a critical aspect of that natural beauty. We seek to do everything in our power to protect them, while helping Mill Creek residents shape the land they call home. We draw our inspiration from the cohabitation of trees and humans, and are proud to help bring about this synergy between trees and people.
Between every two pine trees there is a door leading to a new way of life." - John Muir
They make up a significant component of any yard, business façade, or public space - in fact they are critical to our entire environment and the Earth as a whole. Trees are life-giving, and provide countless benefits. Trees help combat climate change, and replace CO2 in the atmosphere.
"One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen."
This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people. U.S. Department of Agriculture
They can help to reduce storm-water runoffs and flooding by absorbing surging waters in their root structures. Trees prevent landslides and mudslides by anchoring hillsides, and can save entire communities.
"The planting of trees means improved water quality, resulting in less runoff and erosion. This allows more recharging of the ground water supply. Wooded areas help prevent the transport of sediment and chemicals into streams." USDA Forest Service
Well placed trees can help save on energy costs in both residential and industrial applications. Trees can assist in conservation projects, by doing much of the organic work required to save or recover damaged ecosystems. Trees also connect us to nature. Trees aside our homes provide shade and privacy, and remind us of the changing seasons, our evolving lives, and our connection to the planet.
"In laboratory research, visual exposure to settings with trees has produced significant recovery from stress within five minutes, as indicated by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension." Dr. Roger S. Ulrich Texas A&M University
Trees are also a source of natural beauty. They stand out, and people notice well-maintained foliage. Tree-lined streets have an air of elegance, and ground communities cut from forests and characterized by development. Trees - their greens, yellows and oranges, often provide the only natural color in our cities and towns. Their natural beauty is invaluable, and we must protect and help them.
People notice beautiful trees.
Conversely, they notice when trees are unkempt or sickly. In fact, our friends in the real estate business tell us that trees, and their curb appeal can be the make-or-break factor in decisions around housing or commitment to a business, school, or park. Check this out:
"Having large trees in yards along streets increases a home’s value from 3 percent to 15 percent."
Wolf, Kathleen L, PhD, University of Washington (2007) City Trees and Property Values. Arborist News. 16, 4:34-36.

It is estimated that there are over three TRILLION mature trees in the world. - Mapping Tree Density at a Global Scale, Crowther, Glick, Covey, Bettigole, Maynard, Thomas, Smith, Hintler, Duguid, 2015. In this same study, the authors estimated, of all the trees, that "...1.39 trillion (46%) are in the tropics or sub-tropics, 0.61 trillion (20%) in the temperate zones, and 0.74 trillion (24%) in the coniferous boreal forests. The estimate is about eight times higher than previous estimates, and is based on tree densities measured on over 400,000 plots. It remains subject to a wide margin of error, not least because the samples are mainly from Europe and North America." The same paper goes on suggest that "...about 15 billion trees are cut down annually and about 5 billion are planted. In the 12,000 years since the start of human agriculture, the number of trees worldwide has decreased by 46%."
Luckily we can help reverse this trend, and continue to help our planet through planting, conservation, and (the easiest method) protecting the trees we currently have. That's where we can help. Our team are professionals in the tree service and tree care space, and can tackle any job from planting to tree maintenance, to tree removal. Whenever we can, and when it makes sense, we aim to preserve and help our clients protect the trees they already have. If we can help our clients achieve their objectives without cutting more trees down, this is our preference. Through this approach, we can protect biodiversity, our environment, and the Earth for future generation.
