Tree Pruning
Pruning involves the deliberate removal of smaller twigs, brush, and dense material and does a few things for trees: it reduces competition for light and water, helps the tree remain healthy, and reduces the extent to which trees catch wind and accumulate ice. Regular pruning is a critical aspect of tree maintenance, and can vastly increase the life of your trees. There are several different types of pruning. Your needs will vary, and our team will work with you to determine exactly what you need:
Young Tree Pruning: Young trees can develop multiple leaders (think of these as miniature trunks protruding from the top of the tree) and multiple branches throughout the height of the tree. While this may sound natural, multiple leaders can rob the tree of nutrients, and result in wasted growth. Voluminous branches also cause issues, as these tend to weigh young trees down in a negative manner. The pruning of young trees is critical to proper growth, in that it sets the foundation and "skeleton" for a healthy tree later in life. Don't neglect this step (especially if you're planting yourself) otherwise your efforts and attentiveness could go to waste. Mature Tree Pruning: Trees at all stages of life require pruning - and mature trees are not an exception. A tree benefits from pruning in all the same ways as younger trees: pruning redirects energy toward healthy growth, reduces the weight load of the tree, and encourages new growth. Arborists often refer to this as "cleaning." Any dead or dying material should be removed in this step. Additionally, pruning around the bottom of the tree can help increase light, and ensure a tree's branches aren't resting on the ground. This practice, known as "raising" has aesthetic benefit as well. In some cases, pruning can be combined with trimming, where much larger segments of a tree are removed. Fruit Tree Pruning: Fruit trees require specific care to continue producing fruit. While this isn't challenging work, timeliness is important - as is making the right cuts. Let our team help you reset your fruit trees each year so they continue to produce in the coming season. Vista Pruning: Do you have a great view from your deck or patio? Is it obstructed or partially blocked by large trees or branches? "Vista Pruning" is the practice of trimming and pruning branches back to restore a view. Let our team know this is what you're looking for, and we'll ensure you get your view back! |
